We have engaged a range of participants, from designers, artists and thinkers, to engineers and researchers, who provide their own perspectives on the future. These ideas have been generated from the act of pondering timelines, whether familiar or yet unknown. The participants' ideas constitute the exhibition content, which manifests itself as "the Future in Plural Form," like a flourishing plant. In the heart of Tokyo, Tadao Ando’s Design Sight Museum stands as a beacon of architectural brilliance and design ingenuity.

The museum, a design museum, was created by architect Tadao Ando and fashion designer Issey Miyake. The split-level concrete structure includes a hand-sanded steel roof (whose design was inspired by Issey Miyake's A-POC ("A Piece of Cloth") concept) and 14-meter (46 ft) long glass panels. The building is a low-rise structure consisting of one ground floor and one underground floor. Most of the volume of the building, which has a unique form featuring a roof made from giant steel plates that slope gently down to the ground, is buried underground. Once inside, the space opens out on a scale unimaginable given the building's unobtrusive exterior. The ground floor houses Gallery 3 and shop space, while the underground floor houses two galleries and a naturally lit sunken court.

It is read as "two-one two-one design sight."21_21 DESIGN SIGHT has its own symbol, a plaque called "The Product Logo," made of a sheet of metal. The plate, inspired by a style of address display panel seen anywhere in Japan, indicates this facility as being a "place" of design. This also represents something that we see all the time but never pay attention to.

The building is on the edge of the park area and has 1,700 square meters of floor space, including two galleries and an affiliated café run by chef and restaurateur Takamasa Uetake. Designed by architect Tadao Ando, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is a masterpiece of contemporary architecture. Nestled amidst a serene, open public space, seamlessly integrates with its natural surroundings. The decision to submerge 80% of the building’s floor space underground was a deliberate choice to preserve the tranquility of the environment. What people unconsciously feel themselves drawn towards is what we here call The Original. It is next to impossible to conceptualize a design that is not in some way indebted to The Original,’ shared Naoto Fukasawa. The impulse for the creation of 21_21 Design Sight originated during the Isamu Noguchi exhibition in New York. Designer Issey Miyake, architect Tadao Ando and sculptor Noguchi talked about the need for a place where Japanese design could be discovered, promoted and shared. The project then took shape in the form of 21_21 Design Sights, which opened its doors in Roppongi, Tokyo Midtown, in March 2007.Tokyo Midtown is a new development with a range of offices, parks, shopping malls, apartments, restaurants and museums. The area around Roppongi is well known for its many pioneering galleries with contemporary art, architecture and design. In recent years the local art and design scene has been given a boost with the opening of the Mori Museum of Art in Roppongi Hills, followed by the National Tokyo Art Center in Nogizaka and the Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo Midtown. While the café and museum function independently, their entrances face each other at grade. Diners are greeted by the café’s open kitchen and tables oriented toward the parklike setting.

United by an exterior passage, these two halves of the project add up to a sleek, triangular figure that follows the lines of a public walkway rimming Midtown’s northwest corner. Both volumes abut the path with a rear wall of concrete, but face Midtown’s massive forms with separate, tentlike, folded-steel roofs, each one tapering to a point that practically touches the ground in front. The interior spaces of the Design Sight Museum exude a captivating simplicity. The structure, now considered to be one of Tokyo’s signature works of architecture, is impressive and beautifully simple in its aesthetics at the same time. It houses two floors, with the entrance and reception on the ground floor. A staircase leads to the ‘underground’ area, where travelling exhibitions are held.

The museum is nestled in a green park, which softens the sharp exterior. Temporary exhibitions typically focus on the role design plays in daily life and how we interact with it. The museum is near the Tokyo Midtown complex in Roppongi, a short walk from Nogizaka Station. An installation space dedicated to design, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is Tadao Ando’s concrete contribution to Tokyo Midtown. But conceptually, it is closely interwoven with the ideas of fashion great Issey Miyake. The aim of 21_21 Design Sight is to promote understanding and interest in design by involving designers, corporate employees, engineers, craftsmen and the general public.
More important, by creating a direct connection to the outdoors, this space serves to loosen up the interior’s corset-like concrete enclosure, allowing it to breathe. It fits our concept that design should give life to the potential hidden within our daily lives.The distance between the numbers 21 and 21 is meant to be the space between human eyes, which describes this place as the "viewpoint" of design, i.e. Design Sight, and how important it is to observe things with a mind free of distractions. The pieces are accompanied by a graphic display with a large layout of 50 photographs of products. Taken by the photographer Gottingham, the large images lie on the walls behind the products, so visitors can witness details that are difficult to catch with the naked eye. Meanwhile, some of the products are showcased in room-like installations designed by interior designer Yumika Yoshida enhancing visitors’ experience by explaining how the products are used in real life.
Within Tokyo Midtown's 68,900m2 expanse, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT is situated in Midtown Garden, the green area leading to Hinokicho Park, Minato-ku. This location was chosen as it was envisioned that people coming out to the garden would naturally enter the site. If you find a piece of something missing somewhere, it will mean a new loop has surely begun.
This area serves as a cultural hotspot, boasting a plethora of attractions beyond the institution. Visitors can explore the Roppongi Hills, a skyscraper complex that combines shops, restaurants, cafes, movie theatres, and the Mori Art Museum, renowned for its contemporary art exhibitions. The National Art Center, Tokyo, another architectural marvel, is nearby, offering an ever-changing lineup of exhibitions. The two-story, 4,252-square-foot museum is actually one of two trapezoidal buildings that Ando designed for the site. Its twin is a single-story, 2,174-square-foot building containing a café.
